Our Lady of Perpetual Help
The picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is painted on wood, with background of gold. It is Byzantine in style and is supposed to have been painted in the thirteenth century. It represents the Mother of God holding the Divine Child while the Archangels Michael and Gabriel present before Him the instruments of His Passion. Over the figures in the picture are some Greek letters, which form the abbreviated words Mother of God, Jesus Christ, Archangel Michael, and Archangel Gabriel respectively. It was brought to Rome toward the end of the fifteenth century by a pious merchant, who, dying there, ordered by his will that the picture should be exposed in a church for public veneration. It was exposed in the church of San Matteo, Via Merulana, between St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran. Crowds flocked to this church, and for nearly three hundred years many graces were obtained through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. Our Mission Story
Mesquite, New Mexico in 1932 by pioneers of this catholic community. The rich history of the people of this mission although extend back to 1881 when the town of Mesquite was established. In 1935 Bishop Rev. Anthony J Schuler of El Paso bought the land that our mission stands on for $125 from Bracito Development and Power. The church was built on the purchased land prior to the sale of the lots, but that was not a rare occurrence to build then buy in those days. The dedication of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to the Mesquite Catholic Mission occurred on June 28th, 1953 thus marking an important date of celebration for our parishioners and the pioneers of this cultural town. |
